The Figure As Muse
New Work By Laura Shabott
AUGUST 30th - September 5th, 2019
The Figure as Muse is about the visual dialogue created between the person posing and the artist’s response through the language of artmaking: shapes, forms, lines and marks that create a composition. The experience is immediate, intensive and bold for both the viewer and the maker.
Shabott says “My art is part of a Provincetown tradition of working from a model to “search for the real,” a visual ideology brought to the artist colony by Hans Hofmann. From 1934 to 1958, he taught two generations of future abstract and figurative expressionists a unique way of seeing, his push/pull theory. “I am picking up the thread of Hofmann’s approach and making it my own.” says the artist. On view will be charcoal drawings and oil paintings inspired by the human form.
Opening Reception: Friday, August 30th, 7-9pm
