THE BEGINNING, BATHERS,
AND THE BACKROOM
CURATED By Enrico GOMez
AUGUST 10th - 29th, 2018
Four Eleven Gallery is pleased to present The Beginning, Bathers, and The Backroom, three concurrent shows within one gallery space. The Beginning group art show features a selection of works from Four Eleven Gallery Provincetown-local artists including Helen Grimm, Pete Hocking, Liz Carney, Janine Evers, Laura Shabott, Julie Smith, and more. Focusing on work from early in each artists’ creative practice, work created in the early hours of the day and/or work that marks the beginning of new streams of thought and inquiry with regard to each artists’ overall body of work, the gallery presents a curated selection by local favorites on the general theme of “beginnings” and how this idea is given specific form based on personal and varied techniques and practices.
Alongside this exhibition, Four Eleven Gallery proudly presents Bathers, guest curated by New York-area artist, curator, and gallerist Enrico Gomez, that assembles over 15 leading contemporary figurative artists from Provincetown, New York, and beyond, focusing on the observed or indicated male form within the art historical context of “bathers” (the nude body amidst water or within nature) but from a distinctly Contemporary point of view. Bathers features Provincetown favorites Matthew Capaldo, Paul Rizzo, Laura Shabott, and Pete Hocking, joined by Paul Anagnostopoulos, Todd Durm, Carl Gunhouse, Dylan Hurwitz, John Kramer, Rebecca Levi, Tom Levy, Daniel Morowitz, Mavi Phillips, Kristin Racaniello, Alexandra Rubinstein, Cephas Stubbs, Dustin Yager and more. This show explores the body as observed aesthetic form as well as an intersection of identity, desire, politic, power, and personal expression.
Additionally, Four Eleven Gallery offers The Backroom, a cordoned off area within the rear gallery which will serve as a nod to the semi-private and lascivious video booths and Gay-bar back rooms of yesteryear wherein viewing and exchanges of a more clandestine nature might be explored. Personal themes and intimate content from many of the artists within The Beginning and Bathers will be investigated and celebrated within.
Bathers and The Backroom is the 3rd in a three part series of concurrent exhibitions reconsidering the male figure as visual subject, revealed in the work of contemporary artists from Provincetown, the New York area and beyond. The series began with:
